چکیده

2014 The component of the neutron quasi elastic line broadening in the oriented nematic phase, originating from the translation-rotational molecular coupling, is investigated. The molecules, approximated by ellipsoides, are assumed to undergo simple diffusion and a rotational Brownian motion along the long body axes. It is shown that in the nematic phase the translation, as modulated by the rotation, leads to the neutron scattering cross section for the center of mass motion which depends upon the relative magnitude of the term Q4~(0394D)2body/R2. Here, Q~ is the component of neutron scattering vector perpendicular to the optical axis, (0394D)body is the difference of molecular self diffusion constants along the short and the intermediate body axes and R is the rotational diffusion coefficient along the long molecular axis. The center of mass neutron scattering cross section is represented by a single Lorentzian or by the sum of Lorentzian terms. In the former case the weak hindering approximation is applicable in this phase. It is suggested that for PAA, the temperature dependence of the laboratory self diffusion constants D~ and D~ (~ and ~ to the optical axis) might be governed by the temperature dependence of the order parameter. Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Nematic Order near a Tricritical Nematic - Smectic a Phase Transition

The nematic to smectic A (NA) phase transition in liquid crystals has been a subject of extensive study in recent years. The original theories due to McMillan [ I] and de Gennes [ 21 suggested that this transition could be first or second order. De Gennes, using a Landau expansion of the smectic free energy, emphasized the coupling between the smectic or density order parameter, v and the nemat...

Generalized nematohydrodynamic boundary conditions with application to bistable twisted nematic liquid-crystal displays.

Parallel to the highly successful Ericksen-Leslie hydrodynamic theory for the bulk behavior of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), we derive a set of coupled hydrodynamic boundary conditions to describe the NLC dynamics near NLC-solid interfaces. In our boundary conditions, translational flux (flow slippage) and rotational flux (surface director relaxation) are coupled according to the Onsager vari...

Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Anisotropic Ordering, Spin Relaxation, and Slow Tumbling in Liquid Crystalline Solvents. 3. Smecticd

In this work the nonaxial ordering and spin relaxation of PD-Tempone spin probe in several liquid crystalline solvents exhibiting smectic A and B phases were studied utilizing methods previously employed by Polnaszek and Freed for the study of nematic liquid crystals. The results rleported here for the isotropic and nematic phases are generally in accord with those obtained previously. An analy...

Three-dimensional model for light-induced chaotic rotations in liquid crystals under spin and orbital angular momentum transfer processes.

Liquid crystals interacting with light represent a unique class of soft-matter systems that exhibit various generic nonlinear behaviors, including chaotic rotational dynamics. Despite several experimental observations, complex nematic liquid crystal director rotations in presence of spin and orbital angular momentum transfer processes were left unexplained. We present a self-consistent three-di...
